چکیده

We report our recent work on obtaining on-chip lasers in crystalline double tungstate waveguides using focused-ion-beam (FIB) nanostructuring. Photonic cavity structures were defined by forming deeply etched Bragg gratings in KGdxLu1-x(WO4)2:Yb 3+ using FIB milling. The FIB milling procedure was optimized and gratings more than 4 μm in depth with an improved total sidewall angle of about 5 were achieved. Their optical performance was assessed at 1530 nm in Fabry-Pérot microcavities realized on the waveguides. An on-chip integrated laser cavity at 980 nm was achieved by defining a FIB reflective grating and FIB-polished waveguide end-facet. With this cavity, an on-chip integrated waveguide laser in crystalline potassium double tungstate was demonstrated for the first time.

Focused ion beam nano-structuring of photonic Bragg gratings in Al2O3 waveguides

Focused ion beam (FIB) etching is receiving increasing attention for the fabrication of active integrated optical components such as waveguide amplifiers and lasers. Si-technology compatible low-loss Al2O3 channel waveguides grown on thermally oxidized silicon substrates have been reported recently. We used FIB milling for reflection grating definition on Al2O3 channel and ridge waveguides. Str...

A 35 : Impurity - doped Micro - lasers

Rare-earth-ion-doped monoclinic potassium double tungstates KY(WO4)2, KGd(WO4)2, and KLu(WO4)2 are excellent host materials for solid-state lasers [1]. High-quality KY(WO4)2 optical waveguides were grown and laser operation was demonstrated for the first time [2]. Co-doping a KY(WO4)2 layer with Gd 3+ and Lu 3+ ions allows for lattice-matched layers with increased refractive index contrast with...

Progress on micro-structured KY(WO4)2 waveguides for optically active devices

The optical properties of rare-earth-ion (RE) doped KY(WO4)2 (KYW) form an excellent basis for the realization of optically active devices such as lasers and amplifiers. External-cavity laser experiments on KYW:Yb planar waveguides confirmed these predictions by high slope efficiencies up to 80%. In-house equipment enables the epitaxial growth of KYW:RE layers and their optical characterization...
